Watch, Rate, & CompareTM

Watch, Rate & CompareTM training scenarios use modeling techniques to help learners see both good and bad ways to perform a task.

Goals: Learn by observing the performance of a task, reflecting, and discussing it with others.

Description: Learners begin by watching a video of a person performing a task, then rate the performance along several dimensions. Once their ratings are in, learners compare their thoughts with those of peers and experts. The model has three components:

  • Watch - Learners see a situation, usually in video (but could also be in graphical or text form).

  • Rate - Learners evaluate the situation according to certain pre-defined criteria, and also may offer free-form comments.

  • Compare - Learners see the ratings given by experts and peers, and also can see or hear comments from others.

Guidance and Feedback: In this framework, the guidance given is somewhat indirect so learners give genuine answers, rather than trying to find the "right" solution. When learners need to rate the task's performance, they can follow links to certain content to help them make an informed decision. For example, in a site to train retail employees how to coach their staff, learners can find out more about "timing," one of the ratings criteria.

Feedback is also less direct here. Learners are not told their assessment was incorrect, but they'll get to see if their assessment differs from those of experts and peers. This type of feedback asks learners to reflect on their responses, but in a style that's open.

Uses: Best for visual tasks and activities that are expensive or difficult to simulate. Examples include: coaching employees, where body language and personal style weigh heavily, and sales training.
