Boston Chicken Cashier Training
1991

Description: Considered to be the first-ever learn-by-doing simulation for corporate use, the Boston Chicken Cashier Training system taught new cashiers how to ring up customers' orders quickly and accurately. Customers appeared on-screen in video, and cashiers could rely on an online tutor for assistance in ringing up the orders. Meters indicating the cashier's speed and accuracy appeared on-screen at all times, giving this simulation a game-like feel--but the game was the task the learner needed to become expert at performing. This system demonstrated, at a time long before the phrase "e-learning" had even been coined, a way in which learning by doing could provide effective, engaging training.
